EndNote: Scopus

This software package for managing references (citations) is available free to Monash University students and staff. This guide has information about working with EndNote in the Monash University environment.

Database to EndNote instructions

Run a search on Scopus.

Direct export

  1. Mark the records you wish to download
  2. Select Export from Results Manager
  3. From the expanded options box:
    • Select RIS Format (EndNote, Reference Manager) as the export file format
    • Select All available information from information to export drop-down menu
    • Click Export

  4. When the scopus.ris file appears, click Open. (Alternatively, open it from your Windows 7 Downloads folder.)
  5. Endnote should launch automatically, if not, select a library and click Open.
  6. The references should now be displayed in Imported References.
  7. Open various references to verify the content and check whether any information is missing.


  1. Mark the records you wish to download
  2. Select Export from Results Manager
  3. From the Output screen:
    • select Export from 'Select the desired output type for the selected documents'
    • Select RIS format (Reference Manager, ProCite, EndNote) from the drop-down list in the 'Export Format' menu
    • Select Complete format from 'Output' drop-down menu
    • Click Export
  4. Click on Save file and save as an RIS file to the desktop (eg scopus.ris)
  5. Open EndNote program and a library (File-Open)
  6. From the menu bar, select File-Import
  7. An Importbox opens:
    • Import data file: select Choose File and select file from Step 4
    • Import Option: pull down menu and select Other filters. Select Scopus (Elsevier)
    • Duplicates: select appropriate option from pull down menu
    • Text Translation: leave option as No Translation
  8. Select Import
  9. Records imported into the library are displayed in a separate window.
