Subject headings

To find items by subject in the library catalogue do an t style="fontSelect in subject from the first drop down menu and enter relevant terms. Alternatively, do a Basic search and refine by subject using the Topic facets on the left-hand side of the search results screen.

Primary and secondary sources

A primary source of information is an original document , object or an original thought.  First-hand information. This includes the reports on discoveries or events and are usually the first formal appearance of original research.

Primary sources

  • surveys
  • speeches
  • autobiographies, diaries
  • oral histories, interviews
  • newspaper articles
  • works of art and literature
  • research reports
  • government documents
  • original documents, e.g. birth certificates, trial information

A secondary source of information is information created about a primary source. Second-hand information.

Secondary sources

  • books and articles that interpret or review research works
  • histories
  • criticism of literature, art works or music
  • biographies
  • political commentary
  • encyclopedias
  • dictionaries
  • newspaper editorials
