Using Search to find resources

Search logo

Using natural language, a single search will return results from a number of different sources. They include

  • those held locally in the library
  • Monash University Research Repository
  • Monash University Publishing, as well as
  • a vast collection of commercial electronic resources

You can refine results of a 'basic' search by using the 'facets' (topic links) on the left. Or you can do an 'advanced search' and prescribe limits to your searching.

Refer to the Library Search guide for help using Search.

Search also allows you to check what materials you have on loan and to place holds.

  • hints for using the SEARCH catalogue
  • Check for a subject Reading list
  • SEARCH can be used to find journal articles for your assignments, but for more thorough research, focussing on journal articles and conference papers, use the dedicated subject Geosciences databases.

Other Search features

In Search you can also :

  • view and renew your loans, via My Loans
  • place a Request on a full term loan item that is at another campus, or on loan
  • check if your unit has an online reading list- eg type:

"reading list" mgf1010

Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) must be in capitals

e-Shelf allows you to save and organize items that you find during your search session

Wildcard characters:

To find a journal, use the 'Journals' link in the left column of your Search results.

Understanding call numbers

Each book in the library has a Dewey Decimal call number. Call numbers are attached to the spine or front of each item. The call number assigned to an item indicates its subject matter, author, title and date of publication. Books with similar subject content will be near each other on the shelves. Every part of the number is important for finding an item on the shelf.
