History: For postgraduates

The library offers specific staff services to help postgraduate students.  There are also allocated study spaces for postgraduate students at particular libraries.

Appointments with library staff :

Postgraduate students (including Honours) are able to make appointments with their liaison librarian. The Librarian can provide an overview of library services for the specialised needs of research students. This usually involves assistance with a literature search on the thesis topic; discussing any specialised libraries and access to other library collections which may be important in the research area.

Library classes:

Library workshops are arranged throughout the year on a range of topics relevant to postgraduate students. For example there are introductory workshops for new postgraduates; classes on organising your references using the EndNote software. Classes can be booked via the Library class booking system

Managing your research data at the beginning of the research journey may be something you wish to consider. The University offers advice and support in this developing area.

Keeping up to date

• PhD students can consult the Higher Degrees by Research library guide for Library's services, resources and research training activities for HDR students.
• search a database, save the search strategy and choose the Alert services button. This will enable updates of new articles defined by the search terms you have constructed being added to your email on a regular basis. 
• request the table of contents of specific journals be sent to you as new issues are published.  Supervisors/colleagues may recommend titles and the results from database searches will also identify relevant journal titles.
• identify an article central to your topic. If you have found this article in a database you sometimes have an option to track who has cited the article. You can then establish an alert to anyone else who cites the article in future journals. The Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar databases allow this feature.

Requesting resources from non-Monash libraries

Students conducting research at Honours, Masters and PhD level can make requests to the document delivery library service.  Requests to borrow theses can be made with the approval of the student's supervisor or subject librarian. Students can also request a CAVAL card to use to borrow from other Victorian University libraries.
