iThenticate: When to use

When should I use iThenticate?

To identify potential issues early, we recommend using iThenticate during your writing process.

Thesis supervisors can request their students to create reports at various points to identify any areas of concern for discussion.

When should I not use iThenticate?

  • You should not use iThenticate to check the work of others without their permission. iThenticate use is limited to researchers who are checking their own work to meet the University’s standards for academic integrity.
  • iThenticate cannot be used for peer review of journal articles or other outputs.
  • Undergraduate and coursework assignments should be checked using Turnitin.

Advice for Postgraduates

How often can I use iThenticate to review my work?

There is no limit to how often you can run a report. You may find it helpful to submit drafts regularly to identify potential issues in a timely manner.

 

Do I have to share my Similarity Report with my supervisor?

You do not have to share a report every time you run it. However, if you have concerns or your supervisor requests it, you should share your report with them so that you can discuss any issues and identify a strategy to resolve them.

Advice for Staff

Can I check my student’s work in iThenticate without their permission?

We recommend you ask your student to run the report themselves and then share the results with you to start a conversation about good academic practice.

 

Can I use iThenticate to check work that I am peer reviewing on behalf of a publisher or external organisation?

No. Under the provisions of Monash’s licence agreement iThenticate can only be used by the author of the work who is enrolled or employed by Monash. Many publishers have their own subscriptions to iThenticate which may be available for peer review.

 

Can I use iThenticate to check the work of a colleague?

If you are collaborating on a publication and you have your colleague’s permission, you can use iThenticate to check if the publication meets relevant standards. If you are not working together but you have concerns about the work of a colleague you should contact your faculty Research Integrity Officer, or the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity.

 

Can I use iThenticate to check work that I am examining?

No. Under the provisions of Monash’s licence agreement iThenticate can only be used by the author of the work who is enrolled or employed by Monash.
