EndNote 20: About EndNote

Using EndNote software you can:

• create a personal library of references, including by exporting records from databases 
• organise and annotate the references in your library, and add file attachments
• automatically create citations, references and bibliographies in Word documents.

Mastering EndNote requires an investment of time and energy, as well as familiarity with the citation style(s) you will be using. 

• It is highly appropriate for projects such as theses and other research or writing endeavours with large numbers of references. 
• For tasks requiring relatively small numbers of references (e.g. many assessment tasks), rather than EndNote, we recommend using manual entry and the Cite function in many databases to create citations and reference lists.   

If you require EndNote:

1. Download the latest version, EndNote 20, via the Get EndNote page in this guide.

2. Go to the EndNote training and key advice page to learn the essentials of using EndNote.

EndNote Online is the web-based version of EndNote. EndNote Online has similar, but more restricted, functionality than the standard (desktop) version. EndNote Online can extend EndNote desktop functionality to provide:

• access to EndNote libraries from anywhere
• synchronisation of EndNote desktop libraries to enable working between computers
• sharing of libraries with other researchers.
