Instructions for downloading EndNote

EndNote software (version X9 and 20) is available to Monash staff and students.  Your Monash user name and password is required to download the software. 

Refer to the above tabs For Windows users or For Mac users for instructions on obtaining and installing the software. 

Prior to installation of the software:

  • Check the EndNote software and hardware requirements prior to download. (Note: this link directs you to do not download EndNote from this page)
  • Microsoft Word must be correctly installed on your computer prior to installation.

Note for those using the Vancouver referencing style: Prior to adding entries to your library, the relevant journal terms list needs to set after EndNote has been installed.  Follow the instructions in the document below.

Installing EndNote

On your own computer:

On a Monash supplied computer:

By default, EndNote X9 installs only the commonly used filters, output styles and connection files. To install all available files, chose Custom instead of Typical during the installation process.

  1. Select the Custom option during installation.  
  2. From the drop-down menu called Additional Connections, choose 'Entire feature will be installed on local hard drive'. Repeat this step for Additional Filters and Additional Styles.

After you have installed EndNote X9 we suggest you check for any updates to this version and install them.

To do this choose the Help tab in the menu bar and then "check for updates" from the options.

MacOS Big Sur 

The MacOS Big Sur and Macs with Apple M1 chips are not compatible with EndNote X9. It is recommended you upgrade to EndNote 20.

The Library will fully transition to supporting EndNote 20 from the start of 2022.

EndNote is best used with Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. Security settings in Safari can prevent direct export from databases.


Installing EndNote

On your own computer.

On a Monash supplied computer:

Once it is in your Downloads folder, EndNote will need to be installed in your Applications folder.

To install EndNote:

  • Make sure no applications are running.         
  • Start the EndNote installation program by double clicking the downloaded installer file (EndNote-X9OSX.dmg) to display an EndNote X9 folder.
  • Drag the EndNote X9 folder to the Applications folder on your hard drive.Double click on the Applications folder, then the EndNote X9 folder, then the EndNote X9 application icon in order to launch EndNote.
  • At this point you have the option to register for an EndNote X9 online account.
  • Follow the prompts, then Click Done

Complete the installation:

By default EndNote X9 only installs a selection of the most popular filters, connection files and output styles. Unlike Windows users, Mac users are not offered the Custom installation option during the installation process. Additional connection files, filters and output styles must be installed manually:

  1. Click on EndNote X9 in top left corner of EndNote menu bar ► Customizer
  2. Check every box and click Next, Click Done.


After you have installed EndNote X9 we suggest you check for any updates to this version and install them.

To do this choose the EndNote X9 tab in the menu bar and then "check for updates" from the options.

If you are upgrading from a previous version of EndNote (e.g EndNote X8 to EndNote X9) first do the following:

  • Backup your library, and any style, import filters and connection files you wish to retain
  • Uninstall the previous version. 
    • Windows users:  Use Add or Remove programs in the Control Panel of your computer
    • Mac users:
      1. Start the older version of EndNote
      2. From the EndNote menu select Customizer
      3. Select all the options and then click Uninstall
      4. Click Next and follow the prompts.
