Most Monash University libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification scheme to organise books and journals. The most efficient way to locate material in the library is to the library catalogue, however the following may be useful as a guide when browsing the shelves.
Remember that you can also find ebooks through the online library catalogue.
Each book in the library has a unique call number. Call numbers are attached to the spine or front of each item.
The call number assigned to an item indicates its subject matter, author, title and date of publication.
Books with similar subject content will be near each other on the shelves.
Not all books will be in the same place, sometimes call numbers seem inconsistent, this is because cataloguing practices have changed over time.
Every part of the number is important for finding an item. (eg. 338.479194 W363T 2010)
