Chicago 18th (B) Author-Date

Getting Started

Chicago 18th (B) Author-Date is a citing and referencing style drawn from the 18th edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. You can access an online copy of the manual through the Monash Library. You will be required to sign in.

You can also refer to the Chicago 18th (A) Notes and Bibliography system for general advice on syntax, capitalisation, and punctuation. The key difference between the two systems is the positioning of the publication year. Author-Date reference list entries always begin with the author and the date of the resource.

Elements of citing and referencing in Chicago 18th (B) Author-Date Style

There are two places you need to write references in your assessments.

1. In-text citations

  • Use in-text citations to avoid plagiarism and show how your work is influenced by others.
  • Write these citations in the body of your paper, enclosed in parentheses.
  • The citation format changes depending on the number of authors, and whether you emphasise the author or the information.

2. Reference list

  • At the end of your assessment you need to provide a record of all the sources you have cited.
  • It is placed on a new page at the end of your work and has a specific format you need to follow.
