Library Search: How to search: Advanced

Help with using Search, the Library's discovery platform

The Advanced Search section assists you in constructing Boolean and more complex searches according a range of parameters, including publication date, material type, language and collection.

To access the section, click "Advanced".
From the drop-down menu you can search within different fields as shown in the following image:
Advanced search allows you to choose and search across fields such as 'title', 'author', 'subject', 'tags'

If you search by “subject”, you want to look for results on a specific topic, and the words chosen will appear under the “Details” tab of the results.
See below for an example of “higher education”:

A search on the subject 'higher education', the results page of which can be further filtered using 'sort by', the 'show only' option at the top and 'refine results' facets on the left

To search for a phrase, or a specific title, type quotation marks (“ ”) around the exact words you want to find:

an example of searching "global warming" as a phrase by surrounding it with quotation marks.

To include or exclude certain terms in your results, use search operators: OR, AND, NOT. See examples below (in bold):

  • University OR Academy – results include at least one of the words typed
  • community AND education – results include both words typed
  • workshop NOT lecture - results include the first term, but exclude the second

Once you get the resource you want, you can:

  • View it (digital copy)
  • Get it (physical copy)
