Format

(Marshall 10)

OR

In Marshall's article...(10)

Tips

  • Go to Getting started > In-text citation to view detailed information on in-text citation using MLA, including other examples such as multiple authors and translators. Refer to this section to determine when to include/exclude a page(s) number, as it's not always necessary.

General works cited tips for newspapers

  • If the author is not available, omit that portion of the citation. Cite the article title first, and complete the citation as you would for any other article of that kind.
  • For information on how to format months - see p. 295 of the MLA Handbook.
  • If page numbers are not available (e.g. for an online article), omit that portion of the citation. If an article is spread over non-consecutive pages - for example, an article might begin on page 3, then skip to page 14, record only the first page number and a plus sign +, leaving no intervening space.
  • When a title is in a language other than English you may use the original title in addition to the English translation. The translation should be put in square brackets.

Tips

  • If the newspaper is a less well-known or local publication, include the city name in brackets after the title of the newspaper - see Ranges Trader Star Mail example.
  • For a newspaper section, include the title of the section immediately before the page numbers. Do not italicise a section title - see Marshall example.
