Tables and figures

Refer to the following advice and examples when you want to reproduce or adapt tables or figures from a journal, book or other source.

General tips

  • Tables are numerical values or text displayed in rows and columns.
  • Figures are any visual display which isn't a table. For example, graphs, charts, maps, drawings, photographs, artwork etc.
  • Each table or figure should be titled and numbered in the order they first appear in the text, e.g. Table 1, Figure 3.
  • The caption below the figure or table (the Note) can begin with some concise text to explain the table or figure, but this is optional.
  • The Note must be the same font as the main body text, and double spaced.
  • Reference details are included in both the Note, and the Reference list, but the Note format differs from that of the Reference list entry, as shown below.
  • For images, photos, and paintings reproduced in your work from a book, website or journal article, treat them like a figure. For copyright free and creative commons images see also Citing and attributing images.
  • For further information on laying out tables and figures, and examples, see the APA Style website - Tables and figures.
