Citing and referencing: Websites

A guide to the styles recommended by Monash schools and departments for students and researchers

Websites

Notes:

  • Most websites are not peer reviewed. Before using them, consider the assignment criteria. If peer reviewed sources have been recommended, websites may not be suitable.
  • A web document (not a journal article) may be a Word or .pdf file, available from a website or webpage. Note the website URL in the reference list.
  • Use the year of publication, or if the source undergoes regular revision, use the most recent update.
  • If there is no date use (n.d.) for the year of publication.
  • The verified date is the date that you viewed the source website or document.
  • When citing an entire website or page and not any document in particular or paraphrasing from the page/site, it is sufficient to give the address of the site in the text (no reference list entry is required).
