Citing and referencing: Books

A guide to the styles recommended by Monash schools and departments for students and researchers

Books

Place of publication:
For well known locations, use the city name only (e.g. Melbourne, London).
For less well known locations, use the city/suburb name and abbreviated version of the state (e.g. Collingwood, VIC).
Where more than one location is provided, use the first location listed.

One author

Format

Author AA (Year of publication) 'Title of book.' (Publisher: Place of publication)

Example

Romanowski N (2013) 'Living waters: ecology of animals in swamps, rivers, lakes and dams.' (CSIRO publishing: Collingwood, VIC)

 

Two or more authors

Format

Author AA, Author BB (Year of publication) 'Title of book.' (Publisher: Place of publication)

With an edition

Note: No edition information is required for first editions.

Edited book

Where there is an editor instead of an author, follow the author rules, but also include the abbreviation ‘Ed.’ or ‘Eds’ in parentheses following the editor names: e.g. Editor AA, Editor BB (Eds).
Note: full stop after "Ed.", but not after "Eds" .
