Citing and referencing: Tables and figures

A guide to the styles recommended by Monash schools and departments for students and researchers

Tables and journals

Before using this guide check with your faculty, school or department for their specific referencing guidelines

Follow these examples closely for all layout, punctuation, spacing and capitalisation.

When including a figure or a table from another source in your work, it is important to include appropriate citations.
The formats for Tables and Figures (see below) can also be applied to charts, photographs, graphs, etc.
Please also refer to the In-text citations tab for additional instructions.

As a general rule when doing the reference list for tables and figures follow this structure: Include the normal reference structure for the resource type followed by:

  • Figure number from the original source.
  • Title of the figure.
  • Page number of the figure (if available).
